2.) West Kimberley Regional Prison, Australia
The West Kimberley Regional Prison consists of forty-two buildings. Rehabilitation was the main basis behind the design in order to allow for successful reintegration when the inmates are released. (GRANT,2013)

“The buildings’ exterior colour palette has been informed by the colours of the landscape which helps increase the ‘prisoners’ sense of connection to the country” (GRANT, 2013, ONLINE).
Security elements are not immediately visible which helps create an environment conducive to rehabilitation. The buildings are located around the central oval green space where sports activities are encouraged. It is placed centrally to represent the “life aspirations among the prisoners”(GRANT, 2013, ONLINE).
“Living in housing units allows prisoners greater control over their immediate environment (especially with regard to airflow, temperature, illumination and privacy), which has been shown to reduce the stress on the prisoner”(GRANT, 2013, ONLINE).
These humane design features such as concealed security elements and separate accommodation blocks could therefore have a positive influence on the inmate’s rehabilitation, lowering the chances of the inmate suffering psychologically and aiding their reintegration into society.
